Should We Have Stronger Gun Control Laws?- Right View

Monday, October 26th, 2009

It would be a crime to go against our Second Amendment Rights and actually try to limit our freedom and right to bear arms. We were given that freedom by our founding fathers to protect ourselves from those who wish us harm. As colonists, the British colonial government bullied us and they used their weapons against us and we had no rights to fight back but we did fight back. We fought back so that we could carry our own arms in order to better defend our newly formed nation and ourselves.

Today, there is still no exception. We still possess that freedom and right to bear arms so that we may protect our individual selves, our families, and our nations. Would you make it harder and deny our soldiers their rights to protect themselves? I don’t think so. They are fighting with their lives in the balance just to protect our nation and our security so that we may continue to preserve our lifestyles and our freedoms. There’s no greater honor than that.

Also, if you’re a family man or a family woman and someone breaks into your home with a gun, wouldn’t you want to be equipped with one too in order to save your life and the life of your family members? Wouldn’t you want to be prepared to defend yourselves? I would think that with the growing rate of crime that more people would be to be prepared. Also, stronger gun control laws do not keep criminals from gaining access to a gun. Gun control laws only really affect those who are buying a gun legally. Why would you allow for less people to be able to buy a gun legally and more people to buy it illegally? That seems like bad planning to me. Instead of focusing on gun control laws, maybe we should be focusing on laws that will punish those that illegally carry a gun and actually hurt people on purpose with them!

Should We Have Stronger Gun Control Laws?- Left View

Monday, October 26th, 2009

When it comes to guns, the less people that own them, the better for our safety. Too many times we hear on the news that a child has accidentally killed someone because there was a gun lying around. If we can prevent shootings and harmful situations by making it harder for the bad guys to get guns by increasing stricter gun control laws, then that is what we should do to better protect citizens.

There should be stricter gun control laws increasing the security precautions on who is allowed to buy a gun or not. There should be harsher penalties for those who illegally obtain guns. There should be classes and training that is forced and maintained in order to ensure that those who do quality to own a gun can properly use the gun and know how to practice safety with that gun. There’s no point to give a gun to a person who is just going to use the gun irresponsibly and recklessly. Lives can be endangered!

Though we are given the right to bear arms, there should be some limitations on that right in order to prevent harm from occurring to any person. It is important that we protect every human life. That does not mean that those trained to serve and protect such as soldiers and policemen should not carry weapons. However, there should be strict regulation and strict background and psychological testing involved. It’s better to be safe than to be sorry. That is the motto that we should take when it comes to exercising our right to bear arms. We should exercise caution and since not all do, that is why we need stricter gun control laws to enable that our citizens can keep their rights and still exercise safe measurements. We don’t want people dying or accidentally shooting another person because they are reckless and irresponsible with their rights. So, should we have stronger gun control laws? My answer’s a definite yes!

The Memoirs of a Daughter

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Mother tried to put the pieces back together
But I was torn apart the day he left
Though I do not remember that day,
It left a mark that stings me to this day
He left me and I was never still again
Blind hatred, anger, and tears
All shed for the man I did not know
But I was waiting and hoping he would come back
So the words never spoken would pour out
As water pours out of a glass knocked over
He made a choice that fateful day
It cost him his wife and daughter
But does he look at my little brown eyes
And wonder what could have been?
The path he treads upon does not lead to me
He cuts me up inside as a butcher slaughters the lamb
I bleed through every conscious thought of him
I scream, I shout, I cry
The words I want to say but I remain unheard
He left me and I was never still again
I tried to stitch together the wounds of my torn soul
But some scars lay unstitched
I have an unspoken bond with a man I do not know
A man who was not strong enough to fight for me
A man who put others before his blood
Though words remain unsaid and unheard,
One thing is always known:
He left me and I was never still again.

Letter From the Editor

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Dear Manhattanville Students, Faculty, and Staff,

As we hit closer to Halloween, we now come out with our third issue of the semester. We hit a bit of a rough patch earlier, which delayed our last issue, but we are back on track now and continuing with our tri-weekly schedule. We still invite any of you who wish to join or make any comments to email us at Mville@RightWorldView.com. You’re always welcome!

Also, we are throwing our first fundraiser of the year this week in honor of Halloween called Death of a Politician: the Murder Mystery Dinner Fundraiser. It should a fun event and we will be serving dinner as well so it really is a total package: entertainment and dinner. Plus, it will be a really interactive show with lots of intrigue hopefully! So, make sure to buy your tickets in advance this week!!! If you wish to attend but do not see us in the cafeteria selling tickets, email us at Mville@RightWorldView.com.

So as always, happy reading and till next time, folks!

Sincerely,
Diana Shprekher
Editor-in-Chief

To Arms, To Arms Your Mission: Help Someone in Need

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Are you the type of person who sees someone in need on the street or on your campus and doesn’t do anything to help? Well, you have just identified yourself with millions of Americans today. We have become so complacent with our lives that we are self-absorbed and don’t take time to help out someone else. That is a sad fact. However, that is something that can easily be changed. People, open your eyes and start looking at your surroundings and realize that you have the power to make a difference in even just one person’s life by making their day a little brighter or a little easier by just taking a moment out of your time to help them. Go out and volunteer to get your kind side stirring! Things like this go a long way to improving the kind of society that we are even if it just starts with the Manhattanville College community. Helping others transcends not only to making the helped happier but it makes the helper happy too. The warm feeling in your heart is reward enough for helping another fellow human being that needs you!

She Says… Advice on What to Do About College Drama!

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Being in school and apart of the female species, drama is sure to ensue whether major or minor. In order to prevent drama from escalating to a level in which it is out of your control, you can start by eliminating the middle man. Everyone has that friend that appoints themselves news carrier of the world. They feel as if it is their duty to spread the word and most of the time, as tested in the middle school game “telephone,” the information is incorrect. So you must remember to take what you hear, if it is not from the source with a grain of salt. Also, when
approaching a person with a problem, put aside any emotions that may have initially developed, until you get the full story from the source. Lastly, but most importantly, is avoid “facebooking” or “texting” out problems. These tools tend to be instigators more than solutions. We have become socially retarded because we have become so attached to hiding behind a screen when expressing our feelings or concerns. When you have an issue with another human being, it is important to be respectful adults and talk it out face to face without any outside sources, this way all sides are being heard fully. By providing these controlled conditions, both parties are able to express themselves comfortably and truthfully; bringing them that much closer to
solving the problem.

Fall Fest ‘09

Monday, October 26th, 2009

On October 24th, 2009, Fall Fest ‘09 was well underway. Unfortunately, this year was slightly more disappointing as Mother Nature decided to ruin our fun with the rainy weather. Fall Fest was moved indoors for the first time in years to the East Room. Though there were great band performances and fun activities such as hand waxing, henna tattoos, caramel apples, and Photo Booth, the event still didn’t have the same exhilarating fun as it has in the years past.

The main attractions were the bands and the giant blown up Laser Tag area. However, there was a nostalgia much felt to be missing the Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream Stand, the Battle Dome, and the Rock Climbing Wall. Though the Office of Student Activities did a decent job at making Fall Fest as best as possible, it would still have been tons better on the Quad.

However, if the weather was not enough to ruin the day slightly, there were other factors that contributed to its failure. Though the policy of the Office of Student Activities every year is
sent regarding public intoxication, most students do not follow this rule. As a result, the loud partying, the drunk people ripping posters and fliers in the dorms, and the horde of obnoxious drunk people screaming did not help the cause to make this a fun Fall Fest. Plus, much to many people’s dismay, the usual dinner on the Quad was replaced by dinner in the cafeteria. If that was not enough to bring frowns, the fact that the cafeteria ended dinner at a mere 6:30pm was more than enough to make student very unhappy. Plus, where was there any notification in the changes of the dinner schedule! As students, we like consistency in our meal times or at least notification so we don’t have to end up going to the Pub, which is usually a last resort as lines and wait times were especially long last night. So, nice try Manhattanville but Fall Fest
still wasn’t quite up to par!

Does President Obama Deserve a Nobel Peace Prize?

Monday, October 26th, 2009

It came as a shock to most Americans to discover that President Barack Obama became the forth U.S. president to receive a Nobel Peace Prize. According to the Nobel Peace Prize committee, he was given this award “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” And he certainly has done this. In early Fall, the president promoted a treaty on nuclear nonproliferation in Eastern Europe. Also, Obama has gone to great lengths to reach out the Muslim world of the Middle East due to Bush’s disastrous handling of the area during his term in office.

Now I come to the main argument of my article: did Obama deserve to get this award? Sure, he has inspired more people, especially teenagers since his election campaign. Obama’s passion for reform is the cornerstone of his new administration. However, the problem has been getting the more partisan politicians of Congress to agree to his changes. If he could somehow make the Republicans of Congress to agree with him on his reform bills, then he defiantly deserved the award for actually getting a partisan agreement passed. Obama has, in my view done more talk than action to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. For a man who promised change, Obama still needs to live up to that promise.

Now that Obama has a Nobel Peace Prize to call his own, I hope that this event should signal a call to action within him. To be the recipient of such a prestigious award means that while
you have be honored for your talents, it is now time to use it to galvanize those around you into working for peace as well.
